A Thread of the Future I See
What is the future? For many people, it seems, the future is something they long for desperately yet perceive as somehow vague. But the future, too, is ultimately a present that will arrive someday, and the present generally feels more real to us. When we think about the future, we also picture the situation we hope will eventually come to us. Even so, the future often remains vague, and the greater our expectations of it, the more often we feel a vast, invisible wall standing between who we are now and that future.
In the end, the key to turning the future into reality lies in how closely and tightly we connect it to who we are now. In economics, when we calculate present value, we apply a discount rate compounded over time to a future value to express what it is worth today. In the same way, no matter how vast and great a future may be, if we can only connect it tightly to who we are now, it will no longer be something vague; we will be able to accept it as a reality that can truly come to us. This sense of reality not only becomes an effective driving force that helps us endure the long journey toward the future, but the tight connection itself also becomes a concrete plan linking the present and the future, naturally leading us there.
In a way, my future is clear. To help each person live happily and feel a sense of self-efficacy by their own standards, and to succeed in society by building and realizing that process as a business. And, along the way to that dream, to become an irreplaceable person who makes use of my own strengths. That, in brief and focused on its core, is my future.
I know this description of the future is still vague and lacks specifics in many ways. So let me write down how I am making it concrete and connecting it to who I am now.
Before that, let me ask a question. If you line up dominoes one after another, how large a domino can you knock over? In fact, this question can be restated as a problem that depends on the size of the first domino and the number of dominoes you set up. A domino is said to be able to topple another up to 1.5 times its own size. If we imagine geometrically similar dominoes in the basic rectangular shape, and the first domino has a size of 5, the next is 7.5, the one after that 11.25, … That’s right. At this rate, by just the thirty-first domino, one taller than Mount Everest falls. But a domino of size 5 cannot knock over one taller than Mount Everest directly. That is why a step-by-step plan matters. In other words, the point is to define, realistically, the largest domino I can knock over with the domino I have now, and to aim for it.
(1) That is why I am in the military now. To keep knocking over dominoes 1.5 times the size of the one at each stage later on, I first had to break through the ceiling on the dominoes I could knock over. On top of that, I feel there is no better place than the military to choose the mid- to long-term dominoes I want to knock over someday.
During my studies, I majored in mathematics, completed all the coursework for minors in industrial and management engineering and in entrepreneurship, and spent ten semesters doing a wider range of extracurricular activities than anyone before enlisting. Some might call it a late time to go, but I am spending this time in my own way and far more meaningfully, and I am actually grateful and glad to have come to the military at this point. Over the past five years, I focused on building up a great deal of input and experiencing as much as I could. It was a time of nonstop starting, adding, and expanding, so I never had enough time to take stock of all that input. For someone like me, my time in the military is not only a time to fulfill my duty of national service but also a time to sort through everything I have taken in and fully internalize it as my own.
And 2026 is, by anyone’s account, the great age of AI. Leading startups and major corporations such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are each releasing their own AI models, and the pace of progress is truly staggering. Just as humanity’s potential advanced by a whole dimension with each past industrial revolution, this AI revolution is bringing humanity a level of productivity that was unimaginable until now. This extreme rise in productivity has also had a profound influence on how I, an engineering student, decide on the professional identity I will cultivate in the future. During the personal time I secured in the military, I was able to try newly updated AI firsthand and gauge its future potential. For me, as someone who treats irreplaceability as a core value, checking how far AI can go, what it still lacks, and where limits may remain even in the future was a very important task.
I think that, at least for now, AI’s answers are merely the output of a sophisticated averaging machine (though calling them “merely” that is far too arrogant). I became even more convinced of this after asking it countless questions, about the career-design problems that matter in my life as well as about personal problems I wanted to solve. When it comes to personalized answers (recommendations), AI falls far short of my expectations. In the end, the core of AI’s much-discussed abilities in coding, video production, and fact-based answering is generating correct answers to problems that have clear answers. Even in video production, without expert-level, refined prompts, it ends up spitting out videos with the average, similar features a large model judges to be typical. Perhaps this is an inevitable trait of large AI models, trained by synthesizing, in their own way, the vast amount of information on the internet.
In 2025, I worked as a data analytics intern at Chartmetric and carried out three projects related to recommender systems. What I learned from that work was, first, that solving problems without answers is very hard, and second, that I nonetheless truly enjoy solving problems without answers. Through this, I sensed that solving problems with no right answer (like recommendation) could become what sets me apart. I also realized that the question of career choice, one I take pride in having invested a great deal of time in and personally consider truly important, is the question I will carry through my life. That is because I judged career choice to be a field where AI has limits (that is, where I can secure my own distinctiveness): it is not just one of my interests, but a hyper-personalized problem with no fixed answer.
Further, as a result of long reflection during my service, I am now seriously considering a master’s degree at POSTECH. People often (no, actually quite often) say things like: “Grad school doesn’t mean much these days because of AI.” “If you’re going to grad school, you should at least do a PhD.” “You’ve even finished your military service. Isn’t grad school a bit of a letdown after all that?” “How much longer are you going to stay in Pohang?” And so on… In the past, I was often shaken by each one of these voices. But not anymore. The person who knows me best is, overwhelmingly, no one but myself. (I can say so with confidence because of the countless hours I have spent burrowing into myself.) So what others say about me, in all likelihood, means nothing at all. Instead, all I need to do is act with my own clear sense of purpose. Weighing everything together, including the value of irreplaceability I pursue and the big picture for a successful startup, a master’s at POSTECH was the best choice for me.
(2) If, through my military service as described above, I have broken through the ceiling on the dominoes I will set up and chosen the ones to knock over in the mid to long term, you may be curious what the very next domino I want to knock over in the near future is. Before answering, I want to say that I think a person’s efforts to find the options that suit them fall broadly into two dimensions. The first is the dimension of forms of experience, such as internships and undergraduate research. Through different kinds of experience, you can gauge, for example, whether you are suited to founding a company, to employment, or to research. The second is the dimension of knowledge domains. This means exploring various domains, such as artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and robotics, finding a field that makes your heart race, and deepening your understanding of it.
Because of the nature of military life, there are limits to how much additional effort I can put into the first dimension, forms of experience. On the other hand, it is an ideal environment for exploring and deepening knowledge domains. So I am using my time in the military to broaden my knowledge of the fields I am interested in and to study them in depth. The personalized career recommendation I ultimately want to build is, in the end, tied to recommender systems. And recommender systems are inevitably connected to reinforcement learning (RL), bandit algorithms, and IML (Interactive Machine Learning). So I am currently studying reinforcement learning in my personal time. I requested a meeting with a professor whose lab I hope to join and received materials worth referring to in my current situation. Because I study with a clear sense of purpose and genuine interest, every moment I spend studying in between is fascinating and enjoyable, even when the content is difficult. I also feel anew that mathematics, my undergraduate background, helps me understand reinforcement learning rigorously. Now that I have reached roughly the halfway point of my service, one of my next goals is to build on my study of reinforcement learning and lay a solid foundation for the undergraduate research and graduate life that will begin after I am discharged.
To help each person live happily and feel a sense of self-efficacy by their own standards, to succeed in society by building and realizing that process as a business, and, along the way to that dream, to become an irreplaceable person who makes use of my own strengths is a truly vague and hazy goal. But requesting a meeting with a professor whose lab I hope to join, receiving study materials worth referring to in my current situation, and studying them during my service to lay the groundwork for graduate school is far clearer and more actionable. And what matters here is that the two are clearly connected through many intermediate bridges. I don’t have the time to write out every part of the big picture behind my future, nor do I want to (wouldn’t it be less fun if I told you everything from the start?), but I have no doubt that you, having read this long piece all the way here, understand what I am trying to say. I want to succeed together with someone like you. Success here means a life in which you achieve your own purposes and goals; social success is secondary. If you are curious about me or have anything you would like to talk about, feel free to reach out anytime.
